My name is Nicola Pavan, and I started as a Recruitment Intern with Fuse Recruitment before joining as part-time Recruitment Resourcer in the manufacturing team!
I am currently a full-time student studying a Bachelor of Psychological Studies/Bachelor of Business, and this was how I first heard about Fuse Recruitment. As part of my degree, I had to apply for an internship.
“Once I applied, I heard from Fuse very quickly, and within a week of applying, I was beginning my first day.”
There were many things that attracted me to the internship program at Fuse. One was the company culture, and the other was the type of work I would be doing. The program worked well with my course plan due to the flexibility, and it was a challenge I was ready to take on.
The early days of the internship were fast-paced, and I was occupied with information and work from the moment I walked in the door until to the time I left. I really enjoyed this because it meant that you could dive in right away and learn about the industry.
I used to find talking on the phone quite confronting as I was worried about talking to strangers. However, the team worked with me to discuss the roles and prepare a script. Before I knew it, on my fourth day, I was on the phone doing reference checks. What was also great was that the team were really willing to have me tag along to their phone and video screenings and were open to me asking both them and the candidates questions. What I initially found daunting with talking on the phone is something that I grew to love.
“I enjoy talking to people and not only finding the right candidate for our roles, but also beginning to grow my candidate list for future roles.”
The culture at Fuse Recruitment is unlike any work environment I have experienced. Every single person in the Melbourne team came over and introduced themselves when I first started.
I was very nervous going into my first day, and the team put me at ease with their openness and friendliness.
I completed the following tasks during my internship:
- Using the company database
- Searching for candidates across various platforms
- Researching companies and roles
- Phone screening candidates
- Conducting reference checks
- Writing and uploading job advertisements
- and many more!
One challenge I experienced during my internship was that this was my first office role, and it was a step outside my comfort zone. I overcame this by making sure I prepared as much as I possibly could going in. It was important to show that I was eager to learn, and I was willing to get right into the work.
What I learnt from this internship experience is that recruitment can be unpredictable. Sometimes things won’t go your way, but it’s important to keep working, and your hard efforts will pay off.
“Completing the internship program before starting my permanent role gave me the foundation so that when I did become an employee, I could hit the ground running!”
After my internship, I started working as a Recruitment Resourcer for the manufacturing team in Melbourne. My role involves sourcing candidates, conducting phone, video, and in-person screenings, writing candidate profiles for clients, organising interviews, doing compliance checks, and sending contracts. On average, I work on 8-10 roles at a time, including production operators, pick-packers, forklift drivers, HSE positions, customer service consultants, and more.
“My first permanent placement was with a candidate who was my first video screening while I was an intern!”
I would advise my peers who wanted to follow my path that recruitment is a challenging job but also extremely rewarding. I would recommend anyone beginning as an intern to be curious, and if you are motivated, you will find that there are some good opportunities available.
