Samuel O’Brien, a recent addition to Fuse Recruitment, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the manufacturing sector. With a background that seamlessly combines technical expertise and a passion for helping people, Samuel’s career journey is both inspiring and exemplary.
From Engineering Enthusiast to Recruitment Consultant
Samuel’s career began with a focus on engineering and technical roles, fueled by his fascination with the technical aspects of the industry and his close relationships with engineers. His transition into recruitment was a natural progression, merging his interest in Organisational Psychology and his desire to make a tangible impact on people’s lives.
Sam shares, “I started my recruitment career specialising in engineering/technical roles. I have many friends that are engineers and I’ve always been fascinated by the technical aspects in this space.” This foundation set the stage for his deep understanding of the manufacturing sector’s unique demands and challenges.
Samuel’s dedication and talent quickly earned him recognition in the recruitment world. “I was fortunate enough to be promoted within the first 11 months of my recruitment career to a Senior Consultant position” he recalls. One of his notable achievements includes successfully recruiting two senior Structural Engineers for the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland, who were instrumental in managing some of the state’s largest assets.
Recruitment, especially in the manufacturing sector, is not without its hurdles. Samuel reflects on his journey noting, “There’s been a few challenging projects, but generally learning how to ride the ebbs and flows of recruitment and putting systems in place to minimise the lows has been crucial.”
Building and maintaining strong relationships with both clients and candidates is essential in the recruitment industry. For Samuel, the cornerstone of strong relationships with clients and candidates is honesty. “It’s pretty easy to be genuine if you are honest with people. In my experience, trust is at the core of a strong relationship and honesty facilitates that” he says. One of the most rewarding moments in Samuel’s career was his first successful placement. “That first placement gave me the confidence to strive for greater things.”
Joining the Fuse Family
Samuel’s decision to join Fuse Recruitment was driven by the unique culture that is infused into the day-to-day at Fuse. “Coming from a larger organisation, it’s really refreshing how ‘family-like’ Fuse feels. I joined Fuse because of the energy that was brought in my interview; it was inspiring” he explains.
As he steps into his role at Fuse, Samuel is eager to refine his skills and add value to the team. “I’m excited to learn how different consultants operate and hopefully share some ways of operating that are new to them” he says. His collaborative spirit and commitment to continuous improvement align perfectly with Fuse’s mission and goals.
Looking ahead, Samuel identifies one of the key challenges for recruitment consultants in the manufacturing sector: client engagement. “Being intentional about how you plan your week and use your time to ensure you’re pushing yourself past your comfort zones and the safety net of existing clients is crucial” he advises.
