Congratulations, Graduate! You’ve earnt your degree and now you’re ready to take on the next challenge: finding your first job.

Stepping into the world of graduate job hunting can feel like navigating uncharted waters—exciting yet daunting, filled with promise yet shrouded in uncertainty.

Although it may feel like the job market is overly saturated, recent data from the Australian Ministers’ Media Centre revealed that the employment rate for graduates has increased by almost 10 percent since 2021.

So, don’t let the fear of unemployment overwhelm you, I have put together my top tips to help you kickstart your job hunt and prepare for your graduate role:

Define your career goals

There seems to be an assumption that you need to find a job that corresponds with your degree, however that’s not necessarily the case. According to the University of Queensland, “Gen Z can expect to have 16-17 jobs across 5-7 careers.” With most people experiencing a career change at least once in their lives, it’s important to take time to reflect on your career aspirations before diving headfirst into job applications. What kind of role excites you? What industry aligns with your passions and strengths? It may be a simple step to miss but clarifying your career goals will give you a clear sense of purpose in your professional journey.

Update your resume and LinkedIn

It may sound simple, but this is a step in the process that often gets ignored. Think of your resume and LinkedIn profile as your personal marketing tools—they’re your chance to shine!

Recruiters sift through hundreds of resumes, so it’s crucial to make yours stand out by highlighting your most relevant experiences. Include internships, personal projects, university work, and volunteer activities that align with the role and industry you’re targeting. Keep your resume concise, ideally 1-2 pages, to ensure your key information grabs attention and isn’t overlooked.

In the age of artificial intelligence, resources like ChatGPT can help build your resume. But be cautious of generic content that might not match the specific job requirements and always proofread the AI-generated resume to fit the job criteria.

It’s advisable that you should not put your hobbies or interests in your resume, especially when going for a more professional role. So, instead, you can place them in your LinkedIn profile. Think of LinkedIn as an extension of your personal brand where you can showcase more of what makes you unique and stand out! Research companies and industries

Knowledge is power! So failing to articulate a company’s core values and mission can put you at a disadvantage compared to other candidates. Begin by conducting a thorough Google search of the company and explore additional sources like their social media platforms to understand their workplace culture.

To get a sense of who works at the company, a useful tip is to visit their LinkedIn page. Check out the profiles of employees and your potential interviewer. This can help you identify common interests to discuss during your interview, giving you an edge and making you more memorable to the hiring team. This preparation will not only strengthen your resume but also show recruiters that you align well with the company’s culture, also helping you determine if this company is the right fit for you.

Network, network, network!

Networking is a secret weapon in the job search game. Although it may seem overwhelming, attending career fairs, industry events, and alumni gatherings, help you connect with professionals that are usually out of reach.

People often make the mistake of networking for the sake of networking, but you should begin by genuinely establishing meaningful connections. People are more inclined to help when they feel a real connection rather than viewing you as a mere acquaintance.

These relationships can lead to job opportunities, such as when a company notices that you share a connection with one of their employees. Use your connections to gain insights into your ideal job roles and align your goals with future openings.

Prepare for interviews

Interviews can be nerve-wracking, but with the right preparation, you can ace them with confidence! Practice common interview questions, dive deep into researching the company, and come up with meaningful questions to ask your interviewer. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers based on your own experiences and highlight your accomplishments truthfully. While you can’t anticipate every interview question, our blog “Questions you may be asked in an interview,” covers the most frequently asked ones.

Stay Resilient

Job hunting can be an emotional rollercoaster with its ups and downs. Stay strong even when faced with rejection. Keep refining your job search strategy and seek feedback from mentors or career advisors to continually improve your resume and interview skills. Securing an interview often requires sending out multiple applications, so know that you’re not alone in this journey.
