Meet and greet Daniel Bercolli! Daniel details the story of how he got into recruitment and how he gained many great skills by being around influential people.

What was the best holiday you ever took and why?

Japan, I love everything about it, the food, the culture, the people, the quirks specific to Japan which you don’t find out or understand until you get there, and did I mention the food!

Which meal is your favourite: breakfast, lunch, or dinner; and why?

Dinner. I’m not really a morning person so breakfast is out. I like dinner for the range of cuisine choices and options.

How do you deal with work stress?

I like to do physical activities to deal with stress, hit the gym, weightlifting, playing sport, etc. Also spending time with friends is always a great way for me to enjoy myself and let some stress melt away.

What career advice would you give to your younger self?

Learn as much as you can, strive to be a good communicator (listen more young Dan, you don’t always have to talk) and develop emotional intelligence and empathy.

What did you study and how did you get into recruitment?

I studied a dual degree of Law and Commerce and have worked as a lawyer in a few areas for a few different firms. I got into recruitment by working around the corner from Fuse and consistently seeing and talking to the team. I liked the attitude they all had got talking to a few of them about work and they told me to apply as they were always on the lookout for new talent with a range of backgrounds. I thought my skills might transfer well to recruitment and was looking for an industry change, and though I would see if they were interested.

What skills did you develop early in your career?

My first professional boss/mentor was a partner of the first law firm I worked for. He was a great lawyer and showed me how valuable strong relationships with people in your profession were. He was charismatic and would talk to lawyers on the ‘other side’ like they were an old friend, and because of this people were happy to chat to him, negotiate and work with him. From this I tried to develop strong communication skills, both written and verbal, whilst being objective and considerate of the people I was writing for and to.

Is there a quote that motivates you?

Always go in with a white belt mentality. When you have a white belt mentality, you look at things differently, everything becomes an opportunity to improve. You start asking how could I do better next time? What should I focus on for the next month and get really good at?

Whether it writing, building a business, a relationship. I don’t want to ever stop asking these questions. No longer are you searching for the finish line. There isn’t one. With a white belt mentality, every day is day one.
