Meet and greet, Director, Matthew Christensen! Starting in the industry 18 years ago, Matt highlights the fundamentals of recruitment that remain unchanged despite technological advancements that have impacted the industry along the way.
What type of music are you into?
I love a variety of music and Covid has allowed me to spend some time getting reacquainted with some old favourites and explore some genres that I haven’t listened to much.
As my formative years were in the late ’80s and early ’90s my primary taste falls into the ’90s alternate/grunge scene with the likes of Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Tea Party, TOOL and Pearl Jam being faves alongside the awesome Aussie music that dominated Triple J through that period with You Am I, Regurgitator and Powderfinger being the best of the bunch.
Lately, I have stepped a little further back in time and I am loving the alternate/new wave scene from the early ’80s. There are some absolute classics in there!
What was the best holiday you ever took and why?
I was really lucky in 2019 to go to Europe with my family and Inlaws we took the kids to England, Scotland, The Netherlands, Poland and Italy over 5 weeks and had a blast! Highlights would have been sleeping in castles in Scotland, Florence and Krakow. Hopefully, Covid sorts itself out and we can get back to planning the next one!
How did you get into recruitment and how long have you been in the industry?
Like most people I fell into recruitment, I wanted to get into Pharmaceutical sales after working at a lab for a couple of years. I mentioned in passing to a consultant, who is now a dear friend, that I wouldn’t mind doing what she was doing and a year later I was a Recruitment Consultant. That was 18 years ago… Best decision I have ever made.
What is the best career advice you have ever heard?
You can’t please everybody all of the time.
What does the career highlight you are most proud of?
I am most proud of where we are as an organisation now. Taking the risk 10 years ago to start Fuse, we have come a long way and I am excited about the future of our business.
How has the recruitment industry changed since you started?
Technology has had a profound impact on how recruitment works but the fundamentals remain unchanged, it is still about people, relationships and hard work.
Gone are job ads in papers, candidate cards and fax machines. We are just about to embark on another change as the changes lead by Covid lockdowns become part of the norm. However, I believe the best recruiters in the industry are the ones who are the most active and the ones that work the hardest in understanding their clients and candidates needs.
