Throughout your high schooling life, you’re told that you need to earn good grades, go to uni and then find a job with your degree. What they don’t tell you is that most people don’t follow such a linear path.

I enjoyed school and, like most, I applied for uni to study something I was passionate about – Science! However, unlike some, I decided to defer my degree and take on a traineeship instead. This was one of the best decisions I had made in my life.

I wanted to gain some work experience and earn some extra cash after finishing high school. So, I applied for the Laboratory Techniques traineeship where I worked in a lab while undertaking complementing theory. After the traineeship, I went to uni, just like everyone else, and learned many things that made me grateful I had completed my traineeship!

My biggest takeaway from undertaking a traineeship

Because you’ll be working onsite, you’ll experience real-life work environments that cannot be replicated in school or university. Some of the skills I learnt were:

  • How to build and maintain work relationships
  • How to work with others in your team and how to work with other teams
  • How to apply the theory you’ve learnt in a real-life setting
  • How to hold myself accountable for work-related projects and tasks
  • How to prioritise my time and not rely on deadlines

Here are the benefits of a traineeship:

Hands-on work experience and transferrable skills

I was able to apply theory in a real-life setting. This experience gave me something to refer to when we were learning related subjects.

Work experience gave me a head start when I was looking for a job after uni. Although I did not end up in the same field as my work experience, my employer hired me because I had transferrable skills.

Learn life’s lessons before your peers

My traineeship was paid. I started to learn what it felt like to earn a decent income and be responsible for my own finances.

I learnt what it was like to go to work in the real world. School and universities are very structured. You know when you need to be at school, when you leave, when assignments are due, you have a criterion to meet for each assignment, and you have a schedule for what you will learn in the subject. Going to work is different. You need to know how to hold yourself accountable. Even if you have a dedicated mentor or coach, no one is going to hold your hand 24/7.

Networking opportunities

I met people and grew my professional network. It was nice to learn from people who had been in the industry for a while and talk about their experiences. I gained insight into the industry – things that you can’t easily find on the internet.

There are heaps of benefits to networking. But to keep it short, having a robust network can have profound effects on your career – especially when you’re just starting.

Gain a widely recognised qualification

Traineeships are recognised all over Australia. In under a year, I gained a qualification that taught me hands-on experience in a working environment, transferrable skills, such as time management and communication, and gave a professional network. This made me much more attractive as a prospective candidate!
