FMCG recruitment outlook 2023-2026
Fuse Recruitment offers specialised recruitment services for the FMCG industry in Australia: an industry well-sustained by Australia's comparatively high disposable income and robust economy, and has shown significant signs of recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry is subject to multiple overlapping trends at a global and local level, and as such, it can be difficult to disentangle all of the layered factors that influence the businesses, employees, and labour conditions within it. By placing the FMCG industry within the wider context of the Australian economy, its specific conditions and trends can be understood much more effectively.
According to the National Skills Commission, Australian industries are predicted to grow employment figures (on average) by 9.1% over the next five years, which is an extremely positive outlook for the country as a whole. Unfortunately, Retail Trade, Wholesale Trade, and Manufacturing (the closest approximations available to an FMCG category) are each well below this average, at 4.3%, 1.8%, and 2.7% respectively. So, although employment growth in FMCG is still positive, it may be more difficult for candidates to find work in the area in future years, given that relative job openings may be slight when compared to other industries. This could also have the effect of discouraging younger people from entering the FMCG workforce due to more positive prospects elsewhere.
Specific to FMCG, key trends that are influencing the Australian market include digitisation, social shopping, renewable and recycled goods, convenience goods, and healthy lifestyles. According to InsideFMCG and IRI Australia’s joint research report, 23.3% of Australian retailers invested in digitisation to reduce their costs and improve profitability over the last year (22-23), indicating that retailers are beginning to acknowledge and update their practices in light of the explosive growth of digital technologies like BNPL and more optimised ecommerce experiences in online storefronts and marketplaces. FMCG businesses are increasingly seeking more highly-skilled employees to create and maintain these systems, but those employees can be hard to find - a recent Recruitment Insights Report placed recruitment difficulty in the manufacturing industry for highly-skilled roles at 72%.
The report also mentions one survey that found ‘72% of Australians are willing to to pay a price premium for brands with sustainability practices’, a figure that hints at the growth of ethical consumption, as well as the new purchasing power being exercised by future-focused Gen Z, many of whom expanded their disposable incoming by joining the workforce in recent years.
By leveraging our expertise in FMCG, Fuse Recruitment provides businesses with the competitive advantage through access to a network of highly skilled and experienced professionals. Whether it be Warehouse Assistants, Maintenance Electricians, or Quality Managers, Fuse Recruitment can source capable FMCG employees for all of your needs.
