Power utilities industry outlook 2023-2026
According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s (DCCEEW) latest report, Australia's energy mix largely relies on non-renewable sources, with coal and gas accounting for around 70% of electricity generation. Due in part to public pressure and the government’s targeted net-zero emissions future, the share of electricity generated by renewable energy in Australia has increased steadily over the last decade, rising from around 10.5% in 2010 to 29% in 2021.
The primary technologies contributing to this change are wind, solar, and hydro, with each source comprising a different share of each state’s energy makeup (Tasmania, for instance, has a large hydroelectric base). When broken down, the actual elements composing this push towards renewable energies are things like small solar PV systems owned by Australian families, large renewable systems owned by businesses, as well as accredited investment under the Australian Government's Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET) scheme.
Although Australia's energy consumption fell by 4% to 5,790 petajoules in 2020–2021, the lowest it has been in a decade, this reduction can be chalked up to the pandemic (expressed primarily through lower amounts of transportation-based energy such as petrol costs). This is therefore not a trend expected to continue into the future. In fact, in terms of energy productivity, Australia has improved by 28% over the ten years preceding 2021. We now create $347 million in GDP for each petajoule we consume.
As the importance of renewable energy increases in the coming years (amongst other short-term shocks occurring in the market), it is essential for businesses to have the right recruitment team on their side - one that understands the market to identify and recruit the right talent to meet your recruitment needs. Our utilities and power recruitment team can bring this exact understanding to bear on your business, subsequently finding the right employees for you to succeed.
